Is That Really Cotton? A No-Nonsense Home Test Guide to Spotting Fake Blends in Your Wardrobe
You bought it because the tag said "cotton." But does it feel a little too smooth? Does it cling weirdly after a dryer run? Does it smell faintly synthetic after a workout? You might be dealing with a blend — and you wouldn't be alone in not knowing it.
Blend labeling in the US is technically regulated, but the rules leave a lot of wiggle room. A shirt labeled "100% cotton" should be exactly that. But a shirt labeled "cotton" with no percentage? That could mean almost anything. And even verified blends — say, 60% cotton / 40% polyester — can feel misleadingly soft right off the rack before the synthetic content starts showing its true colors after a dozen washes.
Here's how to audit your existing wardrobe and stop getting fooled at the store.
Why Brands Blend in the First Place
Before we get to the tests, it helps to understand the incentives. Synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, and rayon are significantly cheaper than pure cotton — especially American-grown, domestically milled cotton. Adding even 20–30% synthetic content to a fabric can cut raw material costs substantially while allowing brands to maintain a "cotton" association in their marketing.
Blending also allows manufacturers to hit certain performance metrics cheaply. Spandex adds stretch. Polyester resists wrinkles. Modal adds a silky drape. All of these are things consumers want, and all of them can be achieved with synthetics at a fraction of the cost of engineering a high-quality pure cotton fabric that achieves similar results through fiber selection and weave construction.
The problem is that blended fabrics carry hidden costs the price tag doesn't reflect: reduced breathability, increased static, microplastic shedding in every wash, and a dramatically shorter useful lifespan. You pay less upfront and more over time.
The Burn Test: Your Most Reliable Tool
This one sounds dramatic, but it's the gold standard for fiber identification — and it's completely doable at home with a lighter and a small snipped thread.
What you need: A loose thread or small fabric snip from an inconspicuous seam, a lighter or match, a ceramic plate, and good ventilation.
How to do it:
- Pull a single thread or cut a small piece (about an inch) from inside a seam or hem.
- Hold it with tweezers or tongs over the ceramic plate.
- Touch the flame to the fiber and observe carefully.
What to look for:
- Pure cotton burns steadily, smells like burning paper or wood, and leaves a soft gray ash that crumbles easily. It continues to glow briefly after the flame is removed.
- Polyester or nylon melts before it burns, smells chemical or plasticky, and leaves a hard, bead-like residue that doesn't crumble.
- Rayon burns fast — faster than cotton — with a similar paper smell but almost no afterglow and very little ash.
- Blends show mixed behavior: partial melting with some ash, or a smell that's part chemical, part organic.
If your "100% cotton" tee melts even slightly or leaves a hard residue, you've got synthetic content the label isn't being upfront about.
The Water Absorption Test
Pure cotton is naturally hydrophilic — it pulls moisture toward the fiber. Synthetics, particularly polyester, are hydrophobic by nature (though some are treated to wick moisture, which complicates things).
How to do it:
- Lay the fabric flat on a waterproof surface.
- Place a single drop of water on the surface.
- Watch what happens over 5–10 seconds.
What to look for:
- Pure cotton absorbs the drop quickly, spreading slightly as the fiber draws water in.
- Polyester-heavy blends bead the water on the surface, with slow or minimal absorption.
- High-blend fabrics will show partial absorption with some beading.
This test is especially useful for evaluating bedding, towels, and undershirts — items where moisture management directly affects comfort.
The Static Test
This one requires no tools at all.
After pulling a garment from the dryer (no dryer sheet), hold it up and observe. Pure cotton generates minimal static because the fiber absorbs ambient moisture, which dissipates electrical charge naturally. A garment that clings to itself, crackles when you shake it, or immediately attracts lint and pet hair has significant synthetic content.
This test is less precise than the burn test but works well as a quick first-pass filter when you're evaluating a pile of laundry or shopping in a store.
The Feel-and-Stretch Test
Run your fingers across the fabric surface. Pure cotton, especially quality American-milled cotton, has a slightly textured, matte hand feel — not slippery, not overly smooth. It has natural weight and drape without feeling stiff.
Now stretch a small section of the fabric and release it. Cotton has very limited stretch and recovers slowly. If the fabric snaps back quickly and elastically, spandex or elastane is almost certainly present. If it stretches easily in all directions, you're likely dealing with a significant synthetic blend.
Your Wardrobe Audit Checklist
Use this checklist to work through your existing pieces systematically:
- Read every label. Note the fiber content percentage, country of manufacture, and care instructions.
- Flag any item labeled simply "cotton" without a percentage.
- Run the burn test on any piece you're uncertain about (use a seam thread, not visible fabric).
- Apply the water drop test to bedding, towels, and activewear.
- Do the static check on everything fresh from the dryer.
- Separate pieces into: confirmed pure cotton, confirmed blend, and unknown.
- Assess the unknowns — decide whether to keep, donate, or replace.
Shopping Smarter Going Forward
Once you know what to look for, buying pure American cotton gets easier. A few rules of thumb:
Demand specifics. Look for labels that state "100% cotton" clearly. If a brand is proud of their fiber sourcing, they'll say so explicitly.
Seek out American-made. Domestic brands that source from US mills tend to have more transparent supply chains and are far less likely to use deceptive blending practices. The accountability is baked into the sourcing.
Ask questions. Brands with nothing to hide will tell you exactly where their cotton comes from and how it's processed. If a brand's customer service can't answer basic fiber questions, that tells you something.
Trust your hands. After a while, the feel of quality pure cotton becomes unmistakable — that particular matte, substantial, breathable hand that no synthetic can fully replicate.
